How is Ear Community giving back to the Microtia and Atresia Community?
Thanks to your contributions and support, Ear Community is making a difference across the world by helping give back in many wonderful ways. Here are some of the wonderful ways Ear Community is able to help give back thanks to your support:
– Since 2011, Ear Community has brought thousands of people together at our FREE picnic events, helping educate about all options and helping families know that they are not alone with Microtia and Atresia.
– The Ear Community website was the first comprehensive source of information for Microtia and Atresia families and the medical community and our Facebook online support group is one of the longest running support groups. We actively manage 5 Ear Community support groups for Microtia and Atresia.
– Ear Community has paved the way by supporting education about Microtia and Atresia through presenting multiple accredited educational webinars.
– Ear Community established National Microtia Awareness Day that takes place on November 9th of each year to help educate and promote awareness about Microtia and Atresia. Many medical professionals and Microtia and Atresia families embrace our day all around the world.
– Ear Community has advocated for hearing device insurance coverage on Capitol Hill during Advocacy Days and has helped with state petitions to help get Baha/BAHS/BAIs covered by insurance providers.
– Ear Community’s founder and Executive Director sits on multiple advisory boards for hearing loss and Microtia and Atresia research, participating in many meetings and conference calls.
– Our organization was invited to go before the FDA where some of our community members were asked to speak about Microtia and Atresia during a listening session. We are hopeful that newer technology that will lead to a regenerated/3D printed ear in our future.
– Ear Community is helping with genetic research for Microtia and Atresia and is currently on grants with Harvard University and MIT, collaborating with the Broad Institute and the Gabriella Miller Kids First Foundation.
– Each year, Ear Community attends and presents at state/government meetings, hearing device conferences, medical professional trade shows, and meetings including the EAA and EHDI.
– We help new families who feel a little lost with guidance over the phone, in person, and via e-mail, we help with IEPs and 504 Plans for school and attend these meetings with families, and provide information about all options for Microtia and Atresia.
– Ear Community has hosted over 60 family picnics around the world including holiday events such as our annual Secret Santa program.
– Ear Community has donated over 100 new hearing devices to the needy all over the world.
– Ear Community awards college scholarships.
– Ear Community has helped one family with funds toward reconstructive surgery (travel cost reimbursement).
– Ear Community collaborates with other organizations to help fund and host events for Microtia and Atresia and D/HH events.
– Ear Community has collaborated with ASHA to help provide a script during newborn hearing screenings for new Microtia and Atresia families that hospitals now use.
– We work closely with medical professionals, teachers and therapists, hearing device companies, and families to help educate together.
– Ear Community has been recognized for providing family leadership excellence and advocacy by Oticon Medical and EHDI.
