2024 Ear Community Microtia and Atresia Summer Family Picnics
Ear Community hosts picnics every year around the world helping bring Microtia and Atresia families together. This year’s picnics will take place in the United States in Orlando, Florida/ Orange County, California/ Calgary, Canada/ Edina, Minnesota/ Broomfield, Colorado/ New Orleans, Louisiana/ and Montreal, Canada! It is very exciting for many families! Everyone enjoys attending our picnics and our Ear Community picnics always offer such a wonderful opportunity for Microtia and Atresia families to come together, share experiences with each other, and maybe even make a new friend. Medical professionals such as world renown Microtia and Atresia repair surgeons, anaplastologists, ENTs, audiologists, and therapists along with the world’s leading hearing device companies all come together to mingle with us at our picnics, helping educate us on all of our options including hearing loss.
Our events are held outdoors providing a relaxed environment and so the kids can play. Sometimes an indoor location is needed when collaborating with a surgeon conference.

*** This year’s Ear Community events are made possible thanks to our organization’s proud Sponsors, Donor Organizations and our Community Contributors! Without the continued support of our sponsors, donor organizations and community contributors, we would not be able to bring our Microtia and Atresia families together at our events as we have done for the past decade. We also would not be able to work on all of the research and studies that our organization contributes to that help benefit our community in the future. Ear Community is thankful and appreciates the continued support from all of our supporters! Your support means the world to our families, our community and to our organization! ***
We look forward to seeing everyone at our Ear Community picnics this year!

Orlando, Florida USA
June 1st, 2024
Our 1st Ear Community microtia & atresia event of the summer took place last Saturday, June 1st, in collaboration w/Nemours Children’s Health in Orlando, Florida!
It was a beautiful day! 185 people attended! Microtia & atresia families attended from all over Florida, including from Indiana, California, New York, Colorado, Nebraska, Tennessee & Venezuela! Lots of families were excited to meet our picnic hosts, Natasha & Ben Rich, who did an amazing job sharing their journey! Ben shared how he is doing as a HS Senior, playing sports & being aided w/a bone anchored hearing device! What an amazing role model we had with us on our special day! Natasha is also an amazing mother and advocate! She works for EHDI helping new families find their way with children born with hearingloss. We had lots of families travel to meet Ally (Melissa’s daughter and co-Founder of Ear Community) wanting pictures w/her who have been following our organization & our journey for years! Saturday was the 1st time for many meeting someone just like them w/microtia & atresia! Some of our organization’s donors were in attendance & I got to see a special friend of mine who is very near & dear to my heart, a legend in the audiology field – Dr. Linda Cox! Linda was one of the very first audiologists I was able to learn from when Ally was born. Even though Linda lives in Florida – a phone call w/Dr. Cox changed my life forever – she informed me & educated me & probably helped shape me into the advocate I am today! Amazing! Thank you to Captain Red for helping put smiles on our children’s faces as our face painter and magician! Everyone LOVED meeting Rusty the bunny too!
Our conference portion of our event began w/my dear friend, Dr. Angelo Leto Barone, Dr. Cedric Pritchett & Amanda D’Ambra welcoming everyone & sharing about Nemours’ microtia & atresia clinic & their new Ear, Hearing & Communication Center. Dr. Leto Barone also spoke about the butterfly effect & how a small event like attending his first Ear Community picnic in Maryland almost a decade ago, had that effect on him – recognizing that microtia & atresia kids needed more than just the standard of care!
Thank you so much to Ear Community’s Sponsors (Cochlear, Oticon Medical, MED-EL, Bone Conduction Hearing & the Florida School for the Deaf & Blind) for helping make our special day possible! Thank you to Pax & his family (the Gross Family) for making Ear Community’s Pax’s Eyewear Fund possible so our friend, James Hermsen, could provide eyeglasses for microtia kids! Thank you to Captain Red for making our day extra special as our magician!
A special THANK YOU to our amazing Sponsors for helping make our special day possible for our community! Without your support, Ear Community would not be able to continue our mission of helping give back to the Microtia & Atresia community!

Here are some fun memories from our special Ear Community microtia and atresia event!
Calgary, Alberta Canada
June 22nd, 2024
Our Calgary picnic in Canada took place this weekend and was amazing! Our Ear Community picnic hosts, Danielle and Arabella Carter, brought 75 people together in our microtia and atresia community on our special day in Calgary on Saturday, June 22nd! This was our organization’s second picnic hosted in Calgary over the past decade.
Here’s what Danielle had to say about our special day on Saturday!
Ear Community – for all their hard work, love and support!”
* A very special thank you to the Gross Family Foundation for your incredible support to our Ear Community Organization and for helping make Pax’s Ear Fund and Pax’s Eyewear Fund possible through our organization for our community to benefit from!

Here are some fun memories from our special Ear Community microtia and atresia event!
Fullerton, California (USA)
June 22nd, 2024
Our Orange County Ear Community picnic in Fullerton, CA was AMAZING! Did you know that this was Ear Community’s 11th time hosting a microtia & atresia picnic in California over the years? Yep! We had nearly 300 people attend, which was awesome! We had families travel from all over California to attend, including from Colorado, Nebraska, Arizona, Oregon, Indiana, Mexico, Italy & more! Our event was also in collaboration with Dr. Youssef Tahiri Plastic Surgery with guest speakers including Dr. Yossef Tahiri, Dr. Yu-Tung Wong (Cedars-Sinai) & Jim Hogue (Ocular Prosthetics) and our Ear Community Founder, Melissa Tumblin. Our event attendees were able to learn about outer ear reconstruction by Dr. Tahiri, implantable hearing devices & hearing loss from Dr. Wong, prosthetic ears from Jim Hogue & about the good work that our Ear Community Organization has done for our community over the past 14 years.
A very special thank you to Christine Bayan & Family (DJ, Ava & Sean) for hosting this year’s picnic, which was their second time hosting a CA Ear Community picnic! The day was beautiful just like this family is! Christine always does such an amazing job with our picnic events, making everything special down to the very last detail (like the table settings, balloon arches & the “Microtia Kids Rock” cupcakes)! Thank goodness for Christine’s husband, DJ, as well for doing the Costco shopping & bringing coolers & moving everything in for our event! Another very special thank you to James & Rachel Fitzgerald & their Family! Talk about life savers! Thank you for all of your help with setting up to hanging banners! You have no idea how much your help was appreciated! A special thank you to Caitlin Hurst for helping organize this year’s Ear Community events! You knocked them all out of the park, Caitlin, & I am grateful for all of your help! Thank you to Paola Luna for organizing the conference part of this event for our families & it was so nice to finally meet you!
It was an amazing time for so many families who attended – from learning about options for microtia & atresia, to just simply meeting someone else for the first time with microtia & atresia! I had a number of people appreciate learning about our organization’s genetics research with new findings showing an increased risk for microtia & craniofacial microsomia on chromosome 3. It was especially a relief for the mothers to realize that they didn’t do anything during their pregnancies to cause their children’s ears to be underdeveloped or missing. It is always wonderful to see so many familiar faces & new faces too! So many tears of joy on our special day!
A special thank you to my daughters, Hailey and Ally, for helping work the Ear Community table during our event! Thank you so much to our organization’s sponsors (Cochlear Americas, Oticon Medical, MED-EL USA & Bone Conduction Hearing for helping make our events possible! Thank you to my friend, James Hermsen of SuhHermsen Adaptive Eyewear Solutions for providing eyeglasses and sunglasses for microtia kids through our Ear Community Fund called Pax’s Eyewear Fund with an extra special thanks going out to Pax & the Gross family for being incredibly supportive of our community)! A special thank you to Dr. Donny Suh for joining us at our event who is an eye & vision expert & one of the minds behind SuhHermsen Adaptive Eyewear Solutions & thank you to the CARE Study Team for sharing about the research Ear Community, Seattle Children’s & the Center for Appearance Research is working on to better our community! Thank you to Elizabeth Desloge for sharing about our annual National Microtia & Atresia Awareness Day event taking place on November 9th in Orange County again this year! Thank you to our amazing entertainers for making our day extra special with big smiles on our children’s faces! Thank you especially to our organization’s donors for helping give back through Ear Community & to the families who traveled to be with us on our special day! Without everyone’s support & dedication to our community & organization, Ear Community would not be in our 14th year of serving the microtia & atresia community!
Here are some wonderful memories from this year’s picnic in California!

TY! – Rasma & Robert, MN
Families who attended the Children’s Minnesota microtia & atresia conference learned about the options for microtia & aural atresia through the microtia and atresia clinic, led by Dr. Siva Chinnadurai. Attendees also got to hear from a wonderful parent panel too! Senator Amy Klobuchar made a wonderful video for our community with a message to the Tumblin Family & our community about how she supports Ally’s Act, S. 1135 & is a proud co-sponsor!
Here is the FB link to Senator Klobuchar’s video for our community.

On Saturday, July 13th, 2024, our 9th Headquarter Colorado Ear Community microtia & atresia picnic took place in beautiful Broomfield, Colorado! The flatirons are so pretty as you enter the park where our picnic is always held. We had around 170 people attend from all over Colorado, including Arizona, Washington, Utah, California, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho & Spain on a HOT 101 degree day, but we had Kona Ice to cool us down & plenty of water that was donated by Eldorado Natural Spring Water!
It was a beautiful picnic hosted by our friends, The Hurst Family! Caitlin Autumn and Cash and Family (Doug, Quinn & Tillman) did an amazing job hosting our special day for our community! Caitlin also managed to get (4) tickets donated from the CO Rapids Soccer Team too! I was lucky to have Caitlin help me this year with organizing all of our Ear Community picnics & she did an amazing job! She even managed to do all of this while her son, Cash, had outer ear reconstructed surgery with Tahiri Plastic Surgery in December! Thank you so much for all of your hard work & dedication to our Ear Community, Caitlin Autumn!
We had many families attend with new babies! We also had many adults & children who got to experience meeting someone else for the very 1st time w/microtia & atresia too, which brought lots of tears of joy! In addition to having a past Ear Community Board Member join (Scott Newcomb), our next year’s Idaho picnic host, Daniel Baldwin joined & we also had the CEO of the US Olympic Fencing team join us, Phil Andrews, – his family lives in Colorado Springs where the US Olympic Training Committee is located! They are in Paris now! Dr. Youssef Tahiri also joined us from Beverly Hills, CA & Laura Stueckle joined from our CARE Study research team from Seattle Children’s!
Thank you so much to everyone who made our day a little extra special! Thank you to the Gross Family Foundation for their incredible support to our organization! Thank you to the Blue Chip Foundation, Omnium Foundation & to the Broomfield Rotary Club & Rotary International for supporting our organization so we can continue the good we do for our community!
Thank you to James Hermsen w/@SuhHermsen Adaptive Eyewear Solutions for giving our children eye & sunglasses for microtia kids through Ear Community’s Pax’s Eyewear Fund (made possible by Pax & the Gross Family)! Thank you to Kamen Guentchev – our amazing photographer, for capturing these wonderful memories on our special day! Thank you to Sherri & Isaiah w/Fantastic Facepainting & Magic Rob for putting smiles on everyone’s faces! Thank you to Caroline Fraser for the beautiful & delicious cupcakes! Thank you to Audra Scott & her daughter, Corinne, & family for donating a Ponto BAHS so Ear Community can help another child in need hear! Thank you to the Tumblin Family for being with us on our special day too!

On Saturday, July 20th, 2024, our Louisiana Ear Community microtia & atresia picnic took place for the first time in beautiful New Orleans! Our picnic hosts, Rachel & Michael Bernhard, brought our community together at the beautiful Longue Vue House and Gardens! It was a beautiful day with around 100 people attending from all parts of Louisiana including Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Carolina and Arkansas!
Rachel & her husband, Michael, have been to many Ear Community events over the years, but this picnic was extra special for Rachel! NOLA is home to Rachel & Michael & with this being where they grew up, it meant a lot for Rachel to finally be able to bring her community together! It matters to Rachel, as someone who was born with microtia & atresia, to be able to speak with some of the children – hoping they know they are never alone with microtia & atresia & that they realize how beautiful they truly are. We had many children & adults who were able to meet someone just like them for the very first time at our picnic! There were even some tears of joy from parents as we watched the kids enjoy the day! Rachel wanted a little bit of Louisiana to be a part of our picnic too by having fried chicken tenders, homemade cakes & dill chicken salad croissant sandwiches – which were perfect in the tea house of the Longue Vue House & Gardens for everyone to enjoy! Another special part of our picnic for Rachel is that she & Michael are expecting their first child & are over the moon about starting a family! Rachel is an incredible advocate & person & I know she & Michael will be amazing parents! A special thank you to Rachel & Michael for supporting our community & for supporting the work Ear Community does! As a thank you from the Bernhard Family & as a way of giving back, Rachel & Michael covered the cost of our event in NOLA by making a contribution to our organization!
You will find a picture from this event in our gallery of 3 beautiful ladies standing together who were all born with microtia and atresia and are each 15 years of age apart. They met at our NOLA Ear Community picnic for the first time! (Maddie age 15, Kimberly age 45 and Rachel, our picnic host – 29). Amazing!
Thank you so much to everyone who made our day a little extra special! Thank you to the Gross Family Foundation & the Blue Chip Foundation for their incredible support to our organization! Thank you to the Every Kid A King Fund for supporting our organization so we can continue bringing our community together!
Thank you to the incredible audiology students who volunteered to help us on at our picnic from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center! Thank you for taking the time to help us & be with us at our event even though you were in the middle of taking finals! Thank you in advance for helping the many children & adults with their hearing loss during your career! You are appreciated & will be so important to so many when you give them the gift of hearing! Thank you to those of you who are also part of the LSU LSUHSC New Orleans Audiology Program & the SAA!
Thank you to James Hermsen w/ SuhHermsen Adaptive Eyewear Solutions for giving our children eye & sunglasses for microtia kids through Ear Community’s Pax’s Eyewear Fund (made possible by Pax & the Gross Family)! Thank you to Emily of Painted Faces by Emily Evans for painting beautiful faces, to Julia Marshall, of Birdie The Painter, our artist who painted mini self portraits & to @JoJo the Clown and Magician for making us laugh more!
July 27th, 2024
Our first Ear Community microtia and atresia picnic in Laval, Montreal, took place last weekend on Saturday, July 27th! It was a beautiful day to come together at the lovely Centre Du Sablon! We had around 50 people attend from all parts of Montreal including one family that traveled from New York! Everyone enjoyed snow cones and cotton candy, along with “microtia and atresia kids rock” cupcakes! Lots of beautiful faces were painted up and lots of fun with balloons too and a jumpy house! It was wonderful bringing our community together in beautiful Laval with so many who have never met someone else just like them with microtia and atresia! It is always important to know you are never alone with little and missing ears, crooked smiles and hearing loss! This is why we have our Ear Community Organization!
A special THANK YOU to our picnic family hosts, Federica and Margherita Ghabril and their beautiful Family, for bringing everyone together on our special community day! I know this event meant a lot to Federica and Margherita to be given the opportunity to bring the Montreal community together to spread awareness and advocacy for microtia and atresia! So, a HUGE THANK YOU to Federica for making our special day possible for so many on Saturday!
A special thank you to Angela and Marianne at the Centre Du Sablon for donating this beautiful venue space for our event and to all of the Sponsors who helped donate their time and services or offer a discount that helped make our day even more special! Thank you to Michael Gioia of H GREGOIRE NISSAN CHOMEDEY for also making an incredible contribution to the Ear Community Organization! Thank you so much for helping give back to our organization and the community we serve!
Our special days together would not be possible without the support of our amazing Sponsors! Thank you for educating our community members on the latest in bone conduction hearing devices!
